  • US CO: Medical-Marijuana Advocates Seeking Society's Approval
Denver Post, 04 Jul 2010 - The liquid inside the test tube is neon green, the color of lime Kool-Aid or the mad-scientist potions found only in comic books. Perhaps it's fitting, then, that the contents come with a whiff of danger. They are a mixture of marijuana and solvents, stirred together in a furious swirl by a lab technician wearing protective goggles and latex gloves. Running the concoction through a $70,000 machine, the technician can learn with scientific precision the plant's unique chemical makeup, its potency, even its growing method.

  • UK: Cannabis Drug Launched in UK
Wall Street Journal, 21 Jun 2010 - LONDON-A drug manufactured from cannabis went on sale in the U.K. Monday as a treatment for symptoms of multiple sclerosis. Sativex, which is made from cannabis plants grown at secret locations in England by developer GW Pharmaceuticals PLC, is the first prescription drug made from cannabis to officially go on sale anywhere in the world. It offers legal access to the beneficial effects of an illegal drug thousands of multiple sclerosis sufferers have smoked in an attempt to relieve their pain. It is also a shot in the arm for small U.K. drug developers, which have struggled in recent years to win investor confidence--and funding--because of setbacks in clinical trials of their experimental medicines. Sativex was approved Friday by the U.K. Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency, or MHRA, as a treatment for spasticity in multiple sclerosis patients who aren't benefiting from other treatments. It had been in development for 11 years.

Alice P. Mead, a spokeswoman for a British research company that develops a medical spray from marijuana, argued that the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) should regulate marijuana if doctors are recommending it to patients. She said the FDA process has been carefully crafted for more than 100 years, and while not foolproof, gives medical professionals the information on the purity, potency and identity of a product.
